Welcome to Kakanui Camping Ground

The best little camp ground in the best little town

Kakanui Camping Ground is a family-owned and operated destination nestled in the heart of Kakanui, New Zealand. We offer a variety of accommodation options, including tent sites, powered sites, and cabins. Our camping ground is conveniently located just a short walk from both the beach and the Kakanui River, making it the ideal spot for a relaxing getaway.

Our camping ground provides the perfect setting to relax and unwind. Guests can enjoy a range of facilities, including a communal kitchen, BBQ area, and laundry facilities. For families with children, the fantastic school playground is just 200 meters away. Additionally, there are plenty of activities for everyone, including fishing, swimming, and surfing.

Campground Closing Permanently

We regret to inform you that due to unforeseen circumstances, Kakanui Campground will be closing permanently. Our last weekend of operation will be October 24, 2025.

We understand that this may be disappointing, and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Please rest assured that we are working to ensure all deposits are refunded by the end of October. You can expect to receive a refund within this timeframe.

This was not a decision we made lightly, and we deeply appreciate your support during your time with us.

  • This is a really nice camping ground and spacious with room for big caravans. The camp owners are a lovely young family and super friendly. It has easy access in and out, and you can access the river through a gate at the back of the camping ground. A hidden gem. Can't wait to come back!

  • A great wee camping ground with very friendly new owners. Spacious and private with plenty of trees and a short walk to the beach. Dog friendly. An awesome spot to base yourself from while exploring Kakanui.

  • Truly a hidden gem in coastal Otago, great facilities and even better hosts. Even though our visit was short, it was truly memorable.

    The cabins are warm tidy with comfortable beds, the next morning [we] used the fully equipped kitchen facilities to prepare breakfast everything was easy to find and cleanly kept. Bathrooms and showers clean tidy and well looked after. The grounds are immaculate will definitely be back again.
